Navigating the Transition to College

The transition from high school to college is a significant milestone in a young adult’s life that is filled with excitement, new responsibilities, and, understandably, a fair amount of uncertainty. At Body and Mindfully Healthy, we understand how emotionally complex this time can be, and we’re here to support that journey. We’re excited to announce a new College Preparation and Transition Group, led by Hannah Morgan, Resident in Counseling. This virtual group will meet every Monday at 10 AM via telehealth, starting July 7th.

The transition from high school to college is a significant milestone in a young adult’s life that is filled with excitement, new responsibilities, and, understandably, a fair amount of uncertainty.

Whether you're a recent high school graduate, a college freshman gearing up for move-in day, or a parent looking for additional support for your young adult, this group is designed to help participants build the confidence and tools needed to thrive in this next chapter.

Why This Transition Can Be So Challenging

Starting college is about much more than adjusting to a new academic environment. It often includes leaving behind familiar routines, relationships, and support systems. For many teens and young adults, this period marks the first time they are living independently, managing their own schedules, navigating new social situations, and facing academic demands without the structure they’ve grown used to. These changes can bring about a variety of emotional and psychological stressors. Even positive transitions can be overwhelming when they happen all at once.

Common Experiences During the College Transition:

  • Increased anxiety or mood swings

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Homesickness or feelings of isolation

  • Disrupted sleep or eating habits

  • Academic pressure or fear of failure

  • Challenges balancing freedom and responsibility

  • Questions around identity, purpose, and values

  • Social comparison and difficulty finding belonging

These symptoms are incredibly common, but they don’t have to be faced alone. With the right support, young adults can develop healthy coping strategies, build resilience, and move through this transition with greater self-awareness and confidence.
