The Pattern Breaker Tool

Recognize the Pattern. Change What Happens Next.

Your reactions contain information.

They don't have to make your decisions.

Have you ever sent the text you knew you shouldn't send?

Said yes when you wanted to say no?

Shut down during conflict or reacted before you had time to think?

Found yourself overthinking, people-pleasing, getting defensive, seeking reassurance, avoiding difficult conversations, or repeating a pattern you promised yourself you would handle differently next time?

The Pattern Breaker helps you create space between what you feel and what you do next.

Designed using trauma-informed principles, The Pattern Breaker is an interactive self-reflection and decision-support tool that helps you recognize automatic patterns, regulate your emotions, understand what may be happening underneath your reaction, and make more intentional choices.

You Don't Have to Keep Reacting the Same Way

Sometimes our reactions happen before we even realize we've made a choice.

A partner doesn't respond.

Someone criticizes you.

Your child has a meltdown.

A family member crosses a boundary.

You make a mistake.

Someone seems disappointed in you.

Your body reacts. Your mind creates a story. And suddenly, you're doing the thing you've done a hundred times before.

Maybe you:

  • get defensive

  • shut down

  • over-explain

  • people-please

  • seek reassurance

  • become angry

  • try to control the situation

  • avoid the conversation

  • assume the worst

  • ignore your own needs

These responses don't necessarily mean something is wrong with you.

Sometimes they're strategies you've learned along the way.

The Pattern Breaker helps you notice them and decide whether they're still serving you.

What Happens Between Trigger and Reaction?

The Pattern Breaker guides you through six steps:

NOTICE

What is happening right now?

Identify the situation, emotions, physical sensations, thoughts, and impulse to react.

REGULATE

What does my nervous system need?

Use brief grounding and regulation strategies to create space before making a decision.

UNDERSTAND

What's underneath this reaction?

Explore what feels threatening, what you may be trying to protect, and what you actually need.

CHOOSE

What are my options?

Explore different responses and consider how each one might affect you, the situation, and the people involved.

ACT

What do I want to do next?

Turn insight into action with practical tools for communication, boundaries, coping, and problem-solving.

REPAIR

What if I already reacted?

Pattern breaking isn't perfection. Learn how to take accountability, maintain appropriate boundaries, repair when possible, and practice something different next time.

NOTICE → REGULATE → UNDERSTAND → CHOOSE → ACT → REPAIR

Every pause creates another opportunity to practice.

Help for the Moment You're Actually In

Personal growth is easier to understand when you're calm.

It's harder when your heart is racing, you're angry, someone has hurt your feelings, or you're staring at a text wondering what to say.

That's why The Pattern Breaker includes Help Me Right Now.

Open the app when you need help to:

Calm my body

Stop myself from saying or sending something I'll regret

Think through a decision

Handle conflict

Set a boundary

Understand what I'm feeling

Repair something I did

Figure out what I need

Instead of only learning about emotional regulation, you can practice it in the moments when it matters.

Start Recognizing Your Patterns

One difficult moment doesn't tell you very much.

Patterns do.

Over time, The Pattern Breaker can help you recognize sequences such as:

Trigger: Criticism

What Happens Inside: Shame + anger + physical tension

Automatic Response: Defend

Behavior: Argue + explain + blame

Result: More conflict

Then you can begin practicing another possibility:

Criticism

Notice

Regulate

Get Curious

Choose

Respond Intentionally

Address the Actual Problem

The goal isn't to eliminate difficult emotions. It's to have more choices about what you do with them.

What Are You Creating Next?

Breaking patterns is about intentionally practicing what you want to create more of.

The Pattern Breaker helps you notice when you're practicing:

Safety

Creating physical and emotional safety for yourself and others.

Regulation

Pausing and helping your nervous system settle before reacting.

Connection

Moving toward healthy connection instead of fear-driven interaction.

Boundaries

Respecting your needs while also respecting the autonomy of others.

Curiosity

Trying to understand before assuming.

Choice

Recognizing that an automatic impulse doesn't have to become an automatic behavior.

Accountability

Taking responsibility for your behavior without turning accountability into shame.

Repair

Returning to difficult moments and trying to make things right when appropriate.

There is no perfect score.

There is only practice.

Our Past Can Influence Our Patterns
Without Determining Our Future.

The ways we respond to conflict, uncertainty, rejection, criticism, relationships, and stress don't develop in a vacuum.

Childhood experiences, family relationships, adversity, attachment experiences, culture, previous relationships, and difficult life experiences can all influence what our nervous systems learn about safety, connection, trust, control, and vulnerability.

Sometimes a response that once helped us cope becomes a pattern that creates problems later.

The Pattern Breaker gives you a place to explore:

What I Experienced

What I Learned

How I Learned to Protect Myself

How That Pattern May Show Up Today

What I Want to Practice Instead

You don't have to blame your past.

You don't have to stay stuck in it, either.

The Regulation Toolbox

Sometimes you don't need to understand everything.

Sometimes you just need to get through the next two minutes without making the situation worse.

Explore regulation strategies based on how much time you have:

30 Seconds

2 Minutes

5 Minutes

10+ Minutes

Try different strategies and identify which ones actually help you.

Because regulation isn't one-size-fits-all.

Pattern Breaking Isn't Perfection.

You will still get overwhelmed.

You will still misunderstand people.

You will still say things you wish you'd said differently.

You will still have boundaries that other people don't like.

And sometimes you'll recognize the pattern after you've already repeated it.

That still counts.

Because change can look like:

Noticing afterward.

Then noticing during.

Then pausing before.

Then choosing differently.

And when necessary, coming back to repair.

Progress isn't never getting triggered again. It's having more choices about what happens next.
