One of the most rewarding parts of counseling is watching someone begin to understand themselves in a completely new way. Nathan Foust, LPC, believes lasting change happens when we stop asking, "What's wrong with me?" and start asking, "Why do I think, feel, and respond this way?" That shift in perspective is at the heart of Nathan's work.

Now accepting new clients in our Radford office and via telehealth throughout Virginia, Nathan specializes in helping individuals heal from trauma, depression, and long-standing patterns of thinking that no longer serve them.

More Than Treating Symptoms

Nathan's interest in counseling began long before he became a Licensed Professional Counselor. As a child, he knew he wanted to work in a profession that helped others. After earning his bachelor's degree, he entered the human services field providing Mental Health Skill-Building services. Working closely with individuals facing significant mental health challenges showed him the profound impact genuine human connection could have.

"I wanted to do more," Nathan says.

That desire eventually led him to pursue counseling, where he could help people not only manage symptoms but also understand the deeper patterns behind them. Today, one of his favorite parts of being a therapist is witnessing transformation happen in real time.

"It's a privilege to watch someone become aligned with their true selves."

Helping You Understand the "Why"

Many people come to therapy believing their anxiety, depression, or trauma defines them. Nathan sees something different. He believes our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors develop for understandable reasons. Rather than labeling people as broken, he helps clients explore the experiences and beliefs that shaped how they see themselves and the world.

One misconception Nathan wishes more people understood is this:

"Therapy is not telling you that your entire self is wrong. It's much the opposite ... slowly revealing the understandable reasons why you may feel, think, or act the ways you do."

That philosophy creates space for curiosity instead of self-criticism.

Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?"

Clients begin asking,

"What happened to me?"

"What keeps this pattern going?"

"What would life look like if I responded differently?"

Those questions often become the beginning of meaningful change.

Therapy Built Around Your Goals

Nathan describes his counseling style as:

Grounded.

Validating.

Collaborative.

He believes therapy should never feel like following a generic treatment plan designed for someone else. During the first session, Nathan works with clients to create what he calls a "snapshot" of where they are today. Together, they identify meaningful goals based on what matters most to the client, not what someone else believes they should accomplish.

"No generic, premade goals here."

That collaborative philosophy extends throughout treatment. Nathan intentionally adapts interventions to align with each person's values, experiences, and unique needs.

His clients often describe feeling genuinely heard because their voice remains central throughout the counseling process.

Healing After Trauma

Nathan is especially passionate about helping individuals heal after traumatic experiences. Trauma often changes more than memories. It can shape relationships. Self-worth. Identity. The way we interpret the world around us.

Nathan helps clients recognize how traumatic experiences continue influencing their thoughts and behaviors while building healthier ways of responding. His work integrates several evidence-based approaches, including:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Existential Therapy

These approaches help clients move beyond simply surviving and begin creating lives filled with greater meaning, purpose, and psychological flexibility. As Nathan explains, healing is about understanding the patterns that keep us stuck, and learning we have the ability to change them.

When Is It Time to Reach Out?

Many people wait until life feels completely unmanageable before considering therapy.

Nathan believes there are often earlier signs worth paying attention to.

You may benefit from counseling if:

  • You constantly question or dismiss your own thoughts and feelings.

  • You feel lost or uncertain about your direction in life.

  • You're carrying memories or experiences you'd do anything to forget.

  • You notice the same unhealthy patterns repeating in relationships or daily life.

If you're already wondering whether therapy might help, it may be worth exploring that curiosity. Beginning counseling can feel uncomfortable at first. Nathan compares it to uncorking a bottle that's been under pressure. Initially, it may feel overwhelming.

Over time, the relief becomes noticeable.

Life Beyond the Therapy Office

One thing clients often discover is that Nathan enjoys challenges outside the counseling office as much as he enjoys helping people face challenges inside it.

Many are surprised to learn he enjoys:

Riding motorcycles

Whitewater rafting

Long-distance running

Boxing

Hiking

Photography

Video games

Running, in particular, has become one of his favorite forms of self-care. After a demanding day, you'll often find Nathan heading out for a long run with his dogs. It's his way of reconnecting with the present moment, which is something he also encourages clients to practice.

As he puts it:

"Life happens in the present moment, so we should learn to experience it fully."

Strength Isn't the Absence of Emotion

Nathan is passionate about changing the conversation around mental health, especially for men. One myth he'd like to challenge is the belief that acknowledging emotions somehow reflects weakness. He sees the opposite as true.

"It is not a weakness to connect with your feelings. It is one of the most courageous and honest things we can do."

Whether someone is working through trauma, depression, grief, anxiety, or simply trying to build a more meaningful life, Nathan believes emotional honesty creates the foundation for growth.

Could Nathan Be the Right Therapist for You?

Nathan may be a great fit if you're ready to look beneath the surface of your struggles rather than simply manage symptoms. He works best with individuals who are open to exploring their experiences, challenging old patterns, and building a life that feels more authentic and rewarding.

As he says:

"You might be a good fit to work with me if you are ready to challenge yourself to live a more rewarding life."

His goal is simple:

"To help you reach your goals and heal, whatever that may look like."

Now Accepting New Clients

Nathan Foust, LPC, is currently accepting new clients at Body and Mindfully Healthy's Radford office and via telehealth throughout Virginia. If you're seeking therapy for trauma, depression, anxiety, or long-standing patterns that keep you feeling stuck, Nathan offers a collaborative, evidence-based approach designed around your goals, not someone else's expectations.

Healing doesn't mean becoming someone different. Sometimes it begins by understanding yourself in a way you never have before. When that happens, lasting change becomes possible.
