In July 2025, a new resource for families in Southwest Virginia will officially launch: the Family Stability and Reunification Services (FSRS) Program. Developed with the needs of vulnerable families in mind, FSRS offers a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to rebuilding parent-child relationships and guiding families on their path toward reunification.
Rooted in years of experience in child welfare, mental health, and intensive coordination, this program reflects not just a service—but a vision for healing, connection, and lasting change for families in Galax, Carroll County, and Grayson County.
Why FSRS Matters
For families at-risk or already involved with the Department of Social Services (DSS), the journey toward reunification can be overwhelming. Many are navigating complex systems, emotional wounds, and a lack of support. That's where FSRS comes in.
Our program offers:
Safe, supervised visitation in-home or in community spaces
Real-time parent coaching and psychoeducation during visits
Ongoing support in meeting DSS and Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT) goals
Navigation assistance for connecting with resources and transportation
Consistent collaboration with caseworkers, service providers, and FAPT teams
This isn't just about checking boxes—it's about empowering families to grow stronger, healthier, and more connected.
Led by Those Who Understand
The FSRS program is staffed by experienced Qualified Mental Health Professionals, including former Intensive Care Coordinator and interim DSS leadership, Melanie Summey. These are individuals who know the systems inside and out—and who lead with empathy, professionalism, and a belief in second chances.
Under the direction of Melissa Londry, LPC, a licensed counselor and clinical supervisor with a background in family systems and trauma recovery, FSRS brings together the clinical care, compassion, and accountability that families need to move forward.
Local Solutions for Local Families
Southwest Virginia is a region rich in community, resilience, and potential. Yet families here often face unique challenges—rural isolation, lack of transportation, and limited access to mental health services among them.
That’s why FSRS is designed to meet families where they are, whether that means visiting in the home, meeting in a neutral public space, or helping them connect to transportation resources.
Galax families receive services with no mileage costs.
Carroll and Grayson County families are supported at the state mileage reimbursement rate.
The program is funded by FAPT or DSS, as well as offered as self-pay for families court-involved, but not DSS involved.
Looking Ahead with Hope
We believe that every family deserves a chance to heal, to grow, and to reunite in a healthy, supported way. FSRS exists to offer that opportunity—and to walk alongside families through the hard and hopeful moments alike.
As we prepare to accept referrals starting June 2025, we invite our partners in DSS, FAPT, court services, and the broader community to join us in spreading the word. Together, we can create stronger families and more resilient communities—one visit at a time.
